A beginning is an interesting time, and what a time it has been. Over the holiday break Intel and other chip manufacturers have been caught with their pants down and gone into Meltdown.
The first news organisation to break this was The Register, an excellent if irreverent tech news site and the Reddit sub /r/sysadmin has been an invaluable resource for tracking what works and what does not. Thankfully the issue has been picked up by mainstream news outlets, but this does raise the Spectre of your mum or CEO wanting things patched now, even though some vendors have not released fixes or firmware yet.
That being said a beginning is a good place to start, regardless of how interesting the times are.
